Allain started the company two months ago with a partner, and last night’s game
was only their second public event. So far, they’ve predominantly catered to
private parties.
If you’ve never heard of Allain’s company or Bubble
Soccer, don’t feel like you’re not in the know. Bubble Soccer is obscure and
isn’t a widespread sport in Canada.
Allain explained it was invented by
two Norwegian comedians a few years ago and that the sport’s popularity has
gained traction in Europe and Australia.

He said there’s only one
other company that offers Bubble Soccer in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, and only a
few companies that offer it elsewhere in Canada.
In part, that’s
unsurprising. While the game is undeniable fun — which was a sentiment expressed
by all other participants I talked to — it also tests human logic.
Let me
reiterate the general premise of the game: people run around in giant bubbles
and smash into each other. That’s about it.
Allain explained there are
more games for bubble enthusiasts to play than just soccer. There’s a variation
of British Bulldog, American football and a chess-type game, among others.bubble soccer suits
But in the
end, it all comes back to crashing into other people. To that end, a question
remains: Is it safe?
Before participating, Allain assured me it was. He
said a certain onus rests with the players to not take things too far, and like
any contact sport, a risk of injury is possible. But the bubble should provide
you all the protection you need, he said.
I’ll say this: I woke up today
a broken man.
However, my dietary dependancy on Wendy’s and my
made-for-office-chair body likely played a part in that.
Perhaps the
truth rested in what happened after the final whistle blew and the ball was
taken off the field.
A group of players, all laughter and giggles, ran
around like madmen, crashing into each other — for absolutely no reason. It was
a scene of unsaturated joy mixed with anarchy, and big giant bubbles.
